ATM fraudsters apprehended by CID and SAPS
Working together, officers of the CID and SAPS successfully apprehended two ATM fraudsters on Monday afternoon, 18 August 2008. CID officer Dawoed Plaatjies was alerted to suspicious activity at the Standard Bank ATM in Thibault Square. When he arrived at the bank, one suspect had already been arrested by SAPS and another CID officer. Plaatjies then pursued the other suspect to Auto Atlantic, where he too was apprehended.
The suspects were searched at the Crime Intelligence office and one of them was found to have a card-skimming device secreted on his person. CID officers were trained by the SAPS’s ATM Fraud Squad under the Commercial Crimes Unit to identify the sophisticated devices used to clone and skim cards.
According to Muneeb Hendricks, Security Manager of the CID, the latest arrest is just another instance of how working together has paid off. “Criminals should think twice before they try their luck in the Central City. Between SAPS and the CID, we’ve got them covered.”
