Visualising the Experience – 2010 and beyond

Andrew Boraine concluded the morning with a presentation of some of the possible ways in which the City could experience and interpret the 2010 event visually. This included ideas on everything from how FIFA may brand the city during the event and how the fans themselves would help ‘decorate’ the city in their festive supporters garb, to how Cape Town could follow the examples of cities in Germany during 2006 – thus creating a unique brand for ourselves for 2010 and beyond. The Host City Decoration Programme and Host City Event Supporter Programme

Chris began his presentation by outlining the differences between the City’s Beautification Programme and its Decoration Programme for 2010, by comparing beautification to a home renovation and ‘spruce-up’, while Decoration could be compared to ‘opening up a spaza shop at your home and asking Coca Cola to erect a billboard on your premises and pay you for advertising’. As far as the Host City Decoration Programme was concerned, it was therefore his job to drive as much revenue as possible for the City of Cape Town. Continued…

The “Do’s” of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™

Luyanda Mpahlwa had an important message for forum members: in noting that stadiums today – due to their elaborate construction and the impressions they could make on a landscape – were very much ‘21st Century Cathedrals’, their overriding success was still dependent on their versatility as well as the public’s perception and ‘buy in’ into the many events that could be held at these venues. He also stressed that it was time for South Africans to overcome their negativity towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup: the stadiums would be ready – of that there was no question. But would the host cities be ready to take advantage of the event outside of the stadiums? Said Mpahlwa: ‘We need to be careful that the event does not only happen in the stadium and leaves the city behind. Continued…

2010 Central City Partners Forum III: Visualising the Experience

The third 2010 Central City Partners Forum was held on Tuesday 21 April, and in spite of it being just before Election Day, was fully booked. With the topic “2010: Visualising the experience”, the morning began with a presentation by Luyanda Mpahlwa of MMA Architects.

An advisor to the LOC on the building of stadiums in South Africa, Luyanda addressed the Forum in his personal capacity having attended both the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany as well as other events such as the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean and gave an informative talk on the logistics behind Germany’s stadiums as well as our own.
The second presentation of the morning was given by Chris Bruwer, 2010 Marketing Manager, City of Cape Town, who outlined both the workings of the Host City Decoration Programme as well as the Host City Event Supporters programme. In particular, he presented ways in which the City of Cape Town planned to communicate with the public, and how the 2010 team would be looking to a number of events to be held between January 2010 and the World Cup to maximise the City’s profile.

Unruly Roadworks cannot continue says CCID

The Central City Improvement District (CCID) has received numerous complaints from upset business and property owners in the Central City regarding the inconsistent manner in which roads and pavements have been excavated. Some of these projects are 2010-related, like the high voltage electricity cables being installed through the Foreshore and Western Boulevard to the new stadium. At the same time, Telkom, Neotel and Vodacom are installing fibre optic cables to provide clients with the latest in IT technology – which have to be installed in underground ducts and cables.
