Soccer Cinema is an epic celebration in preparation for the World Cup.As the countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament continues, soccer fans, tourists and ordinary Capetonians are flocking to the Labia Theatre on Orange Street for a unique festival of Soccer Cinema.

The theatre was abuzz with soccer fans last week – foreign fans could be heard drilling locals about the best pubs, restaurants and viewing spots for the matches – before the movies started rolling in the famous old theatre which has thrown itself into soccer fever along with numerous restaurants, pubs and other venues in the Central City.

(Have you heard of the pizza place in Kloof Street which is offering free pizza for a lifetime if Bafana Bafana wins the World Cup? Or of the computer company that is offering free computers if England wins?) The fever is upon us.

The festival, which runs until June 10, was launched as a national road trip, through which a mobile cinema that screened more than 50 football films in more than 40 small and remote towns and villages as well as rural areas throughout South Africa.

Soccer Cinema is the brainchild of festival director Don Edkins from the production company, Steps Southern Africa. Aimed at social upliftment, it also aspired to take soccer to people located far away from the big cities which will be hosting World Cup matches and which feel excluded from all the World Cup action.

The films – which were sourced from all over the world – are long and short documentaries.

Films included in the programme are:

  • More than Just a Game (89 minutes, 2005) looks at how politics played out through soccer on Robben Island.
  • Johan Cruiff (92 minutes, 2004) footage of the famous footballer.
