Nearly 63 000 fans watched the final 2010 FIFA World Cup™ round of 16 match between Spain and Portugal at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday 29 June. The event, which saw Spain knocking Portugal out of the tournament, with a score of 1-0, went smoothly and no major incidents were reported.
As has been the practice since the tournament kicked off, the streets of Cape Town came alive once again – this time in the colours of Spain and Portugal – as the two teams faced each other in miserable weather conditions at the Cape Town Stadium.
Once again, it was heartwarming to see fans – both local and international – ignore the pouring rain to come out in support of their teams and of the “gees” which has come to epitomise this year’s 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The Spain vs Portugal match was, without doubt, one of the highlights of the tournament, not least because South Africa has a large population of people of Portuguese origin.
One Durban newspaper, The Mercury, even took advantage of the match to run a Portuguese edition of the paper on the day of the match.
Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in the Pre-Quarter finals to advance to the Quarterfinals in the tournament.
