9 Christmas markets around Cape Town – support local!

The Christmas lights in Adderley Street have officially been switched on, the air smells of sunscreen and the street cafes are burgeoning with locals and tourists alike. Yup, it’s starting to feel a lot like festive season in Cape Town. And if you need to buy gifts, you’ll be pleased to know that there are a whole lot of fantastic markets happening around the city over the next few weeks, where you can get your Christmas shopping done in a much more relaxed fashion. Plus, you’ll be supporting local, which is always a great thing to do!

Pinelands Craft & Gift Fair, 5-22 December

What to expect: A selection of gifts, including leatherwork, jewellery, glassware, woodwork, baskets, needlework, tasty treats and loads of stocking fillers for the kids. All of these have been made and will be exhibited by 140 crafters from across the peninsula.

Made in the Cape Festive Fair, 5-18 December

What to expect: Specialising in artisan goods, the market offers a variety of products that are not only hand-made in the Western Cape but also extremely stylish and attractive. Decor, jewellery, candles and delicious home baked delights dominate the scene. And what more could you possibly want?

Simply South Gift Fair, 5-22 December

What to expect: Quaint handmade goods, including everything from clothing and jewellery to pottery planters and woodwork. Of course, there will also be a wide selection of eats, as well as a tea garden where you can rest between batches of shopping.

Edgemead Christmas Market, 8-22 December

What to expect: With no less than 250 crafters from across the province gathering here, it’s no surprise that Edgemead’s market is a highlight on the calendar of anyone with a deep-seated love for truly special handmade products.

Blue Bird Christmas Market, 9 December

What to expect: The Blue Bird Market in Muizenberg is a weekly institution for Capetonians (especially those of the deep south) with a penchant for craft drinks and artisan food. However, on one Friday in the festive season, you can expect a load of additional traders selling all sorts of delightful trinkets that may serve well as gifts.

Fab Ideas Christmas Gift Fair, 15-18 December

What to expect: Dedicated to sourcing unique, fresh and funky handmade products, the Fab Ideas market is the perfect spot for those looking to put truly special gifts under the tree.

Love Local Market, 16-17 December

What to expect: Local designers, makers and artisans join forces to bring shoppers colourful clothing, jewellery and even skincare products. If you’re looking for gifts for your hippest friends, this is where you will find them.

Cape Town Summer Market, 16, 18, 19 and 26 – 30 December

What to expect: More than just a shopping experience, the Cape Town Summer Market is aimed at offering families the opportunity to enjoy an evening out in the city together. There will be a Creative, Makers and Family zone, each offering fun activities to keep both kids and their parents engaged and entertained.
