FREE entry to Iziko museums

ISAM_IMD(18May16)04

On Thursday (18 May), Iziko Museums will join the global community in celebrating International Museum Day to raise awareness of these spaces as important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

The theme for this year is ‘Museums and contested histories, saying the unspeakable’ and entrance will be free at all Cape Town’s Iziko Museums, except for Groot Constantia Estate.

According to the International Council of Museums, the theme of IMD 2017 looks at how to understand the incomprehensible aspects of the contested histories inherent to the human race. It also encourages museums to play an active role in peacefully addressing traumatic histories through mediation and multiple points of view.

In Cape Town, Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a whole range of experiences – from seeing collections of dinosaur fossils and rock art to behind-the-scenes tours and drumming circles. The popular annual book sale will be back again and the Iziko Maritime Centre at the V&A Waterfront will be hosting a public talk about the first minefields at sea around the Cape, presented by a knowledgeable maritime curator.

While the Iziko Planetarium will not be open to the public on International Museum Day this year, visitors can look forward to the re-launch later this month, once the brand new Digital Dome has been completed.
