An intimate music venue at the City Hall is available for hire

SC10 CITY HALL FACADE_SM

An exciting new space for music has been established in the Cape Town City Hall as part of the Imagine City Hall campaign.

The space, complete with grand piano, stage lighting and sound has been set up by The Cape Music Industry Commission (Cape Mic) for use in its Tuesday Music series. Adjacent to the space is a bar/coffee shop and an art shop which has already become very popular.

Now the space is being made available to hire outside of the times used by Cape Mic or Spier. The venue can easily take 250 people standing and has 40 chairs for seated events. The venue is rented at R2 000 after 6pm (negotiable before 6pm) and between R450 – R3 000 for sound, lights and engineer (negotiable).

If you are interested in hiring the space for music events contact Hagar Graiser at hagar@capemic.co.za. Alternatively the space is open other forms of performance, art events and book readings, before mid May from Matthew Skade at matthews@africacentre.net.

The Imagine City Hall Art Music Series continues in the next four weeks with performances by a range of talented musos:

  • 13th April: Rus Nerwich Mantras for Modern Man
  • 17th April: Madosini and Derek Gripper
  • 20th April: Feya Faku Quintet
  • 27th April: Akoustik Knot with Sixteen Reasons String Quartet

Tickets will be sold at R50 per performance and are available at the door. (Grand Parade Entrance City Hall). Performances will begin promptly at 8pm.

This environment is part of the bigger Spier Contemporary – a major show of South African art which takes place every second year supported by the Africa centre. As the bar and coffee shop are outside of the venue, it enables a more intimate and serious music space which favours musicians keen to have their audiences focussed on music, and not on getting a drink. With an incredible exhibition attached, it provides a space for contemplation before and between acts.

Consider the City Hall as a hang out spot during the day. It has a great cafe – The Rotisserie, providing excellent coffees, cakes, sandwiches and alcohol and a brilliant pop-up shop – the Fringe Arts, selling affordable art. This part of the City Hall is an excellent environment to have lunch or coffee meetings, for after work cocktails, to browse for gifts or at very least people watch. In addition the space has free Wi Fi so it’s a great spot of blogging and surfing. In addition the cafe and shop linked to the events spaces offer a great environment for events and gatherings such as book club get togethers and more.
