The Cape Town Stadium hosted its third successful test event on Monday 22 March, during which all 55 000 permanent seats were made available for the first time.
‘Cape Town For Jesus’, a religious gathering addressed by well-known South African evangelist Angus Buchan, was the first major non-sporting event hosted at the stadium, and gave the stadium operators another chance to test the stadium’s readiness ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The first test events were a soccer match with a 20 000 crowd, and a rugby festival attended by 40 000 people.
The stadium will host eight World Cup™ matches, including a semi-final. It will have 13 000 temporary seats for the World Cup™, but these will be removed after the tournament.
A further soccer match, the Cape Town International Challenge on 10 April, will see the stadium filled to capacity, with all 68 000 permanent and temporary seats in use.
‘Cape Town For Jesus’ was attended by the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Dan Plato.
