The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s Winter Symphony Season continues on Thursday 12 August with the excellent young Israeli clarinet duo Daniel and Alexander Gurfinkel performing Bruch’s Concerto for Two Clarinets in E minor and Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The concert starts at 20:00 in the City Hall.
The CPO is conducted by its Principal Guest Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes and the programme also includes John Simon’s A Peal of Bells and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6.
Despite their youth, twin brothers Daniel and Alexander Gurfinkel have already gained a solid artistic reputation with acclaimed performances in Israel, Europe and USA. Soon after starting their studies in 2000, they propelled into stardom, after being invited to perform Krommer’s Double Concerto with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta in 2004. They have performed with various orchestras including the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra Rishon-Le-Zion, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, Belgrade Philharmonic, Tonkünstler Vienna, Moscow virtuosi, Ljubljana and the Bratislava Philharmonic. The twins follow in the footsteps of their grandfather Arkadi Gurfinkel, who was a well-known clarinet player and their father Michael, who is also a teacher, arranger and one of the leading clarinet players in Israel.
In a career spanning forty years, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s (CPO) Principal Guest Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes has conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras. In 2007 he recorded the world premiere of Alfred Schnittke’s monumental choral work Nagasaki as well as his Ninth Symphony with the CPO. In 2004, he was awarded an OBE and in 2009 a CBE – in both cases for his contribution to music and charity.
