Whilst I fully appreciate the complexity of this human tragedy, I am nevertheless concerned that the extent of the problem could impact negatively on property prices and formal, sustained business activity in the area of the city most popular with tourists.

My sense is that the soup kitchens run from the catholic and anglican cathedrals are attracting homeless people to the area. This may well be responsible for the burgeoning number now living in The Company’s Gardens.

I have written to the current mayor, asking where she intends locating the one-stop service centre promised in her campaign manifesto, but have as yet to receive a response. Meanwhile, the only organisation willing to assist seems to be the CCID.

Because of the links between substance abuse, psychiatric illness, homelessness and criminal activity my sense is that policing could well be the only way to manage the problem in the absense of adequate and appropriate social services. Many of the people concerned are highly manipulative and can be violent.

Those of us regularly targetted by them and suffering sleepless nights because of the noise they often generate must surely be excused for responding aggressively on occasions? We, too, are only human.
