Barcelona brings urban and economic redevelopment lessons to Cape Town

Decaying and forgotten city areas have the potential to be transformed if stakeholders can intensify their knowledge-driven activities and profit from them. Straatwerk

One of our social development partnerships is with Straatwerk, a faith-based organisation that gives work to the poor and homeless people in Cape Town while providing the Central City with street sweeping and other services. Straatwerk started in the East City with a budget of R5000 per month. Today it has a budget of over R35000 per month, covers the entire Central City, operates seven days a week and most importantly, employs over 80 rehabilitated staff members who work more than 240 shifts a month.

Visualising the Experience – 2010 and beyond

Andrew Boraine concluded the morning with a presentation of some of the possible ways in which the City could experience and interpret the 2010 event visually. This included ideas on everything from how FIFA may brand the city during the event and how the fans themselves would help ‘decorate’ the city in their festive supporters garb, to how Cape Town could follow the examples of cities in Germany during 2006 – thus creating a unique brand for ourselves for 2010 and beyond.
